A Lovingly Restored Toyota Land Cruiser FJ43.

The Toyota Land Cruiser FJ43, is a part of Toyota’s legendary line of 40 Series Land Cruisers made by Toyota from 1960 all the way up until 2001 in some markets. While its production ended in most markets in 1984, in Brazil its production carried on under the “Bandeirante” moniker. The 40 Series Land Cruisers were built as a traditional body on frame design and most were 2-door models. They were available in short, medium or long wheelbase versions, which were designated J40/41/42, J43/44/46 or J45/47, respectively.

Toyota offered the 40 series in both gasoline and diesel variants, but this FJ43 in particular powered by the legendary Toyota “F'' engine, a 3.9-liter, 125 hp, carbureted gasoline engine that is capable 209 lb·ft of torque at just 2000 rpm. This OHV engine, produced by Toyota from 1949 all the way up until 1992 (!), was known not only for that high torque figure at low engine speeds, but perhaps even more for their legendary reliability.

The FJ43, which is what this example represents, is an extremely rare two-door medium wheelbase 4WD configuration, and their market values definitely reflect that rarity. As you can see in the 5-year view on Classic.com, values run the gamut, but well-restored or preserved examples are fetching incredible valuations. For example, as you can see from the dot highest on the graph, Bring a Trailer hosted a digital auction in August of last year that fetched an incredible $221,000 for a 1978.
