Is the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter a good camper platform?
We’re seeing a lot of great builders utilize the inherent function of the venerable Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van for some pretty impressive campers. The excellent construction and options allow buyers and builders to flex the platform to fit a multitude of applications.
The third generation Sprinter van, released in 2019, offered optional factory-issued 4-wheel drive to tackle adverse terrain. For 2023, that 4-wheel drive system was replaced by all-wheel drive. Under the hood is either diesel or gas-powered motors, which are mated to an automatic transmission. The latest Sprinters come standard with a 9-speed, while earlier third-gens – like this 2020 – rocked a 7-speed. Both make for excellent economy and smooth shifting. You may also choose from several packages like Cold Climate Package, Mobility Package, and Trailer Hitch Package to suit your preferences.
You may select between a 144 in. wheelbase (14 ft. 4 in. of buildable space) or 170 in. wheelbase (15 ft. 9 in. of buildable space) variation, depending on budget and needs. Plus, you can choose either high or low roof options in the 144 in. wheelbase variation to add 1 ft. of additional headroom (5 ft. 7 in. low vs. 6 ft. 7 in. high). The 170 in. wheelbase comes with only the high roof option. The tradeoff to all that extra space is a bit more work parking and maneuvering, especially if you’re going off-road, but the difference is largely negligible.
The Sprinter is intended for cargo and utility, so you’ll get a blank canvas from which you can dream up your home-on-wheels.
