About The Jeep Wrangler YJ

The Jeep Wrangler YJ was introduced for the 1987 model year as the successor to the ever-popular Jeep CJ. Like the CJ, the Wrangler YJ was a compact off-roader. It offered excellent drivetrain options like the iconic 4.2L I6 and 4.0L I6 engines, and the NP207 and NP231 transfer cases, depending on the year of purchase.

During its production run, the YJ introduced several trim variations like the Islander, Renegade, Sport, and Sahara. The Sahara, like this example for sale, was introduced in the 1988 model year and was equipped with body color fenders, steel wheels, special cloth seating, AM/FM radio, cassette player, removable rear bench seat, fog lamps and more.

While the YJ was retired in 1995, the Wrangler returned for the 1997 model year with the Jeep Wrangler TJ.

What are Jeep Wrangler YJs Worth?

The 5-year moving average for the O.G. Wrangler comes in at a hair under $15,000 putting this particular example smack dab in the middle. Interesting, the YJ's price curve has trended upward in the years following COVID, with more and more example surpassing the $20,000 mark in recent months.

Features & Specifications

This 1988 Jeep Wrangler Sahara YJ is well-apportioned from the factory and remains in mostly-original condition, save for a minor suspension lift and aftermarket wheels. Prior to the seller's ownership, it was owned by a doctor to visit his Montana cabin and then an older gentleman who used the Jeep gently (never over 35 MPH, and never removing the top) to access a local lake for fishing trips. The seller reports having driven the Wrangler from Montana to Breckenridge without issue.

It's finished in Khaki Metallic with green and tan cloth upholstery. Under the hood lurks the desirable 4.2L I6 engine mated to full-syncromesh 3-speed automatic transmission and 2-speed NP231 transfer case. The odometer reads approximately 72k mi. Additionally, as a Sahara trim you get Halogen fog lamps, Convenience Group (courtesy lights, intermittent wipers, locking glove box), heater and defroster, AM/FM stereo, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and more.
