1979 Chevy Suburban Silverado Estate
1979 Chevy Suburban Silverado (Estate) – All of GM’s light duty and medium duty trucks for 1973 featured new cabs and pleasingly squared-off styling. Building on the success of Chevrolet’s king-sized truck-based wagon, the biggest news for the new Suburban was the addition of a driver’s side rear passenger’s door. A feature that we take for granted today, it also came a dozen years after the competing International Travelall and a decade after the Jeep Wagoneer first offered theirs. While GM may have been late to that game, they stayed for the whole game to play, as IH withdrew from the light truck market in 1975. In those two years, the Suburban not only made greater inroads with market share, they were successfully pulling in new owners who would have otherwise have been car owners. While some of this is due to the four-door arrangement, it is also due to the increasing number of car-like options such as air conditioning, power seats, power windows, tilt steering column and luxurious interior trim. For all years of this generation, the pickups and the Suburban all were available with the same trim packages – from bare bones Custom Deluxe to the well-appointed Silverado.
While finding detailed production numbers on a rare Estate Suburbans on the internet is no easy task, locating unique Chevys truck or Suburban these days is even harder! We owned this highly original and classic Suburban about 3 year ago and jumped on the opportunity to buy her back from the most recent owner. Aside from the rare YG2 Woodgrain Exterior option, this Suburban Silverado Estate has under 78k total miles on the body and under 37k miles on a rebuilt 350 V8 motor (2001 rebuild). The Light Camel paint, exterior trim, and interior (except rear carpet) are all original and in great condition. A modern stereo was added below the dash to avoid cutting up the original location. The motor has been dressed up with a matte-black Chevy script air cleaner and valve covers that are a nice upgrade. The previous owner had plans to use this Suburban as a daily driver so he completed a long list of servicing in the last 2 year year. These items include all new; brakes, carburetor, plugs, wires, radiator hoses, fuel pump, water pump, balancer pulley, head gaskets, and an Optima red top battery. He also performed a complete rear end and cooling system flush. A complete list of features and options includes; Original Paint & Wood, 350 V8, Auto, RWD, A/C, Power Steering, Power Brakes, Chrome Mirrors, Chrome Bumpers, Rancho Shocks, 40 Gallon Tank, Vent Windows, Luggage Rack, Soft Ray Tinted Glass, Folding Center Seats, Original Owners Manual, Original Factory Radio (inop), Panasonic AM/FM/CD, Custom Stereo, Dual Exhaust, Full Spare w/ Cover, New 20″ Detroit Steel Delrays, New 245/40/ZR20 Tires! If you appreciate original patina in a great running classic GM, this Estate Suburban is a hard one to pass up!
