Last week we featured North American EV's HUMMER H1EV, a monstrous HUMMER H1 retrofitted with dual-Tesla motors. Electric vehicles capable of tackling the rigors of the off-road or for broad hauling capacity over longer ranges still may have a bit to go to supplant gas and diesel-powered alternatives, but manufacturers like Rivian are poised to give them a run for their money.
Introducing the Rivian R1T: the electric truck changing the game in electric utility vehicles. The R1T is Rivian's first entry into the automotive market, and it's all-new for the 2022 model year. To commemorate the launch, Rivian built a Launch Edition loaded with a couple of highly-desired upgrades.
While the Launch Edition for both the R1T (truck) and R1S (SUV) sold out within days of being offered to the general public back in November 2020, Garage Kept Motors in Grand Rapids, Michigan are offering this RT1 Launch Edition for sale for $149,900.
Rivian R1T: The Ultimate Off-Road Electric Truck.
Rivian is a game-changer in the electric vehicle game, seeking to tackle one of the most complex consumer automotive use-cases that also happens to be most relevant to our interests: utility and off-road adventure.
For the 2022 model year, Rivian dropped both a truck (R1T) and SUV (R1S). The R1T, like this example for sale from Garage Kept Motors, offers a plethora of technology and thoughtful design elements to help make the case for the R1T as the best electric truck on the market. It features eight total driving modes that adjust ride eight, suspension, pedal response, and two-wheel vs. all-wheel drive, allowing the driver to select for a mode that best suits the terrain, comfort, or performance needs.
Each Rivian is equipped with standard Driver+ technology, allowing hands-free driving. However, notably missing from this off-road truck is hill descent control, which would be an expected feature on a modern off-roader. Instead, regenerative braking takes its place and serves a similar purpose.
Additionally, the Rivian offers a ton of storage options - 62 cubic feet in all - between the bed, front trunk, rear storage bin, under-seat compartments, deep center console, and the gear tunnel between the cab and bed. That's in addition to seating for five passengers.
Each wheel of the R1T gets its own inboard-mounted motor which offers a blistering 835 hp. and 903 lb.-ft. of torque - good for a 3.3 second spring from 0-60. There's no need for a transmission or transfer case. The independent motor control for each wheel and the abundance of immediately-available torque make the R1T a The R1T has air suspension with monotube shocks and cross-linked hydraulics for anti-roll protection and approximately 14.9 in. of ground clearance.
The Launch Edition sports dual front bumper tow hooks and reinforced underbody shield. While the large battery pack boasts an EPA-rated 314 mile range, testing for true off-road application came in at about 160-190 miles. Not a bad range.
