Delica L300 Star Wagon – Chamonix Edition

This is a 1992 Mitsubishi Delica Star Wagon L300 Chamonix 4×4—a surf/bike/snow adventure machine. The Chamonix edition was the highest grade off-road trim available and 1993 was the final year for the Chamonix in the L300. The Chamonix trim means: more interior insulation, dual batteries (new in 2023), a heavy duty alternator, limited slip differential, and a sturdier waterproof interior carpet. This model has a high roof configuration where there is added insulation in the ceiling.
This van has only ~80,000 original miles. It was imported into the US in 2018 and has spent its life in the Pacific Northwest since. I am the second owner. It has been thoroughly maintained and serviced and included with the sale is all service receipts. All work is well documented and this van is turn key and dialed in for your next road trip.

The base camper conversion, completed by OVP, is a smart utilitarian, minimal, yet useful build – featuring an interior bench that converts to a bed platform, Dometic CFX 36 Liter fridge, interior power outlets for USB, 100 AH 12 Volt battery, and AC. Interior LED strip lighting. A top of the line Maxxair fan in the ceiling and a 175 Watt solar panel mounted on the roof.

The brains of the operation include a smart battery isolator, Renogy solar charge controller, a 1000 watt inverter, and fuse block powered by an AGM battery. This Inside / Outside build has a very spacious rear slide out storage / prep area that comes out under the rear hatch, a storage cubby, and inside / outside access to the fridge as well. The roof and Yakima roof rack are accessed by an Xplormor side ladder specifically designed for the L300. There is plenty of headroom to sit comfortably when the bed is in couch mode. A diesel heater was installed in 2023 by Pura Vida Vans in Squamish BC and has worked flawlessly, even with temps in the teens, making it truly a winter trekking machine. The 4WD works great with AT tires (snow tires would make it unstoppable).

The van is rust free, runs and drives without any problems. Everything works as it should. Included with sale is optional custom mattress for the rear bench / bed, as well all original owners manuals for the Delica.

This van will go 70mph all day long. I just drove it 700 miles and it purred like a kitten. I also shot some video while driving so you can check the speed and gauges 🙂 It also comes with a Yakima roof rack, block heater, and a 2″ hitch receiver professionally installed by Rising Sun in Vancouver. There is also more of an overlanding rack included in the sale—it was more than I wanted to haul around but if you want to haul jerry cans, etc., you could swap it back on.

Recent Significant Service and Repairs Include:

  • Rebuilt Injection Pump – 2020
  • AC Service – 2020
  • New Tires – 2018
  • New Timing Belt, Water Pump, Associated Seals + Pulleys – 2018
  • New dual batteries (dual batteries help with cold starting, part of the Chamonix trim package) – 2022
  • Planar diesel heater – 2023
  • Alignment — 2023
  • Valve adjustment with new valve cover gasket – 2023
  • Replaced glow plugs in 2023 and installed a glow plug relay bypass switch (a way of backing up the glow plug system, as the factory computer board that controls the relay tends to stop working when a capacitor tends to split and run acid down the computer board. The board itself can be repaired by a small electronics repair shop, but since it has only been unresponsive twice, I haven’t seen the need to take it in. With the bypass installed it ensures not getting stuck with a cold engine and you can then choose to repair the board or just rely on the manual bypass. Note also that this glow plug system has both 6v and 12v inputs and the bypass switch can trigger either relay (I’ll explain this to the buyer as I’m sure it sounds confusing now!).
  • In 2022, I added a Dometic GO rechargeable faucet with Hydration Water Jug (not included with sale). It utilizes a small sink attached to a modest greywater reservoir—this plumbing setup was added to allow camping through Harvest Hosts which requires some type of water system and the sink panel can be easily removed leaving an open cargo space instead.

I am sad to see it go but am not using it enough and it should find the right adventurer to live its life to the fullest! Serious inquiries only please. Price is firm. Please look around at other vans to get a clear idea of how dialed this one is!
