ABOUT THE 1974 PINZGAUER 710K

The Pinzgauer is a family of high-mobility all-terrain 4x4 military vehicles built in the late 1960s by Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Austria. The name came from an Austrian breed of cattle that often grew to weights of up to 2,500 lbs, which is apropos for such a beefy vehicle. Pinzgauers were made all the way up until 2009, although under new ownership.

The Steyr-Daimler-Puch Pinzgauer is regarded as a highly-capable all-terrain vehicle, made possible by several key design features. First and foremost, it has a tube chassis design that enables extreme mobility by distributing weight evenly and keeping the center of gravity extremely low. Despite that low center of gravity, the Pinz has quite a lot of ground clearance due to portal axles, providing extra clearance over difficult obstacles.

With a top speed of 68 mph (it is not recommended to try this), it can carry more troops and traverse more terrain than a Humvee. It can tow 11,023 lbs on pavement and nearly 4,000 lbs on the trails. 710K models like this measure 164.6″ long overall, with an overall width of 69.3″ and a fording depth of 27.6″ in factory configuration. Fun fact: That’s enough to carry up to 10 troops or two NATO pallets. Now you know.

SPECS

The Pinzgauer was designed to be incredibly easy to maintain. After all, where this thing was designed to go there weren’t often service lifts. Despite its heft, it’s powered by an air cooled 4-cylinder motor that is accessible from the forward cab. Power goes through a 5-speed manual transmission mated to a 2-speed transfer case.

The interior comes configured to seat 5 and includes a desk between the front and rear seats that can be used as a dining room table if, say, you wanted to live in this beaut. This example has been upgraded with a roof-mounted A/C system, dual compressors and a toolkit and assortment of supplies.
