Thirteen Letter Snow Plow: The IH Scout 800B SnoStar.

The original International Scout, the Scout 80, was produced from 1960 to 1964. Its successor, the Scout 800 was produced from 1965 to 1968 and came with a number of improvements in comfort and design such as bucket seats, better instrumentation and an updated dashboard, a better heating system, optional rear seats and an optional 196 cubic inch 4 cylinder or 232 cubic inch inline 6..

The 800 gave way to the 800A and 800B respectively, the latter of which this particular example represents. The 800B was only available for 8 months from August 1970 to March 1971 until it was replaced by the venerated Scout II, and it was actually barely different from the 800A, save for a couple of minor cosmetic details.

But here’s where the 800B gets super cool.

Late in 1970, International Harvester introduced the SnoStar package, a special edition purpose built to run a snow plow, carrying on the legacy of the International Harvester as a workhorse. It came with a more powerful 6 cylinder engine and and Borg-Warner T-39 three-speed auto and Dana-Spicer Powr-Lok rear diff, all meant to be able to power this bad boy through the driving snow. It’s said there were only 472 of these ever produced, but here’s the thing: Because these were made for snow removal and were often put to use in areas where salt and snow were common, many of these are either destroyed or actual rust buckets.

This one? Decidedly not.
