This 1981 Jeep J-10 Honcho Sportside was comprehensively restored by JeepHeritage in Columbus, Texas, finished in Firecracker Red with the Honcho's unmistakable graphics, and powered by an AMC 401ci V8. JeepHeritage originally completed the restoration roughly a decade ago before selling the truck to its previous owner, who added approximately 35,000 miles before the builder ultimately acquired it again. With just 1,264 Honcho-package trucks reportedly produced from 1974 through 1983, this is a rare opportunity to own a professionally restored example with known history and direct ties to the shop responsible for its build.
- Rare Honcho Sportside: The Honcho was Jeep's attention-grabbing appearance package for the J-Series pickup, combining bold graphics with the wide-track stance that helped distinguish some of the era's most recognizable Jeeps. Just 1,264 Honcho-package trucks were reportedly produced between 1974 and 1983, with the package offered on short-bed Sportside and Townside configurations. Genuine examples are consequently difficult to find today, particularly following a comprehensive restoration.
- JeepHeritage Restoration: JeepHeritage completed the restoration of this J-10 approximately a decade ago and later reacquired the truck after its previous owner put roughly 35,000 miles on the completed build. The restoration included a sandblasted, galvanized, and powder-coated frame along with new-old-stock components including the bumpers and grille. Its return to the original builder also provides an unusually direct connection to the people familiar with the truck and its restoration history.
- AMC 401 V8: Under the hood is AMC's 401 cubic-inch V8, the largest-displacement member of AMC's Gen-3 V8 family and an especially desirable engine in a vintage full-size Jeep. Multipoint fuel injection further modernizes fuel delivery while retaining the character of the big AMC powerplant.
- Upgraded Braking & Road Manners: Hydroboost and four-wheel disc brakes provide a substantial braking upgrade over the hardware typically associated with a vintage J-Series truck. Combined with fuel injection, these improvements address some of the areas that can make a restored classic less convenient to drive regularly.
- Lifted Wide-Track Stance: A 6-inch rear and 4-inch front suspension lift gives the Sportside its imposing stance, complemented by 35x12.50 BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires mounted to polished 15-inch wheels. A full stainless-steel exhaust rounds out the mechanical and exterior upgrades.
About the Jeep J-10 Honcho
Jeep's full-size pickup lineage dates to the Gladiator introduced for 1962, with the trucks adopting J-Series nomenclature during the 1970s. Sharing their basic SJ architecture with the Wagoneer and Cherokee, these pickups remained in production for more than two decades and combined traditional truck utility with the rugged four-wheel-drive hardware for which Jeep had become known.
The Honcho arrived during the 1970s as one of the most memorable versions of the J-Series. More than a conventional trim level, it was an appearance package distinguished by prominent graphics and the wide-track look associated with period Jeeps such as the Cherokee Chief. Production was limited, with a reported 1,264 Honcho-package trucks built between 1974 and 1983.
The Sportside body makes the formula even more distinctive. Its separate rear fenders and exposed running boards give the J-10 a traditional stepside pickup profile that contrasts with the squared-off cab and unmistakable Jeep front end. Add Firecracker Red paint, period Honcho graphics, and the proportions created by this truck's suspension and tire package, and there is very little with which to confuse it.
This example goes considerably beyond rarity alone. JeepHeritage specializes in the restoration of vintage Jeeps, and the company's previous involvement with this truck means its history does not disappear once the restoration was completed. Approximately 35,000 post-restoration miles also distinguish it from a freshly completed build that has yet to see meaningful use.
