In the 1980s, badge engineering was all the rage. Automakers were rapidly expanding into foreign markets through partnerships, and one of the easiest ways to streamline costs and build brand credibility was by applying one badge to another manufacturer’s product.

While this wasn’t a new practice, the ’80s produced some of the most memorable examples. Case in point: the 1989 Dodge Power Ram 50, a rebadged Mitsubishi Mighty Max (known as the Mitsubishi Forte in Japan). The connection stemmed from Chrysler’s long and complex alliance with Mitsubishi, which began decades earlier.

Over the years, the two brands shared a surprising number of models: the Mitsubishi Galant became both the Dodge Colt (1971) and Dodge Challenger (1978); the Mitsubishi 3000GT became the Dodge Stealth; and the Mitsubishi Montero was sold by Dodge as the Raider.

The Dodge Power Ram 50, despite its compact footprint, was its own kind of beast. First released in 1979 as the Dodge D50, it was renamed the Dodge Ram 50 beginning in 1981. By 1982, Dodge introduced a four-wheel-drive version, dubbed the Power Ram 50, which became shorthand for capability in a small package.

The second generation launched in 1987—the same year as Dodge’s midsize Dakota, which would go on to see production through 2011. The Power Ram 50 remained in production until 1994, while its Mitsubishi twin, the Mighty Max, exited the U.S. market in 1996 due to slow sales.

The Specs
While the Power Ram 50’s backstory offers a fascinating glimpse into Chrysler’s global strategy, the truck itself stands on its own as a capable, fun, and quirky 4×4. It was offered with gasoline, diesel, and turbo-diesel engines, and in both two-wheel-drive (Ram 50) and four-wheel-drive (Power Ram 50) configurations.

This particular example is powered by a 2.6-liter 4G54 inline-four, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and dual-range transfer case. It delivers the toughness you’d expect from a Dodge, mixed with the practicality and personality of a 1980s Japanese pickup.
