The Legendary Mitsubishi Pajero

The Mitsubishi Pajero—known in the United States as the Mitsubishi Montero for reasons that will become clear when you inevitably Google the name—is a midsize SUV built by Mitsubishi from 1981 to 2021. This particular Pajero is a second-generation model (1991–1999), which evolved the original’s formula with smoother body lines and the introduction of a powerful diesel engine.

The Pajero is perhaps best known for its dominance in the Dakar Rally, often referred to as “the world’s toughest race.” Stretching over 6,200 miles from Paris through the deserts and plains of Africa, Dakar pushed both man and machine to the limit. Mitsubishi first entered in 1983 and claimed its first victory in 1985. Over 26 entries, the brand earned 12 total victories, including an unprecedented seven consecutive wins, solidifying the Pajero’s reputation as the “King of the Desert.”

These rigs are tough to find—only nine second-generation Pajeros have sold at auction in the last five years. That’s why this one’s worth jumping on while you can.
