This 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon Recon started as one of the more desirable late-production JK configurations and has since evolved into a seriously capable trail build with professional upgrades performed over several years. Located in Fulton, Maryland, it shows approximately 92,000 miles and is powered by the factory 3.6L Pentastar V6 paired with a six-speed manual transmission and 4:1 Rock-Trac transfer case.
The build centers around a Dynatrac ProRock 44/60 axle package with 4.88 gearing, Adams 1350 driveshafts, a Synergy long-arm suspension with 4 in. lift, PSC steering, upgraded brakes and cooling, and 38-inch Nitto Ridge Grapplers on KMC beadlocks. Poison Spyder armor, Bestop Core Doors, a Trektop Premium Glide soft top, and an Alpine X409 head unit round out a Jeep that has been upgraded well beyond the typical lifted JK.
- Dynatrac ProRock 44/60: The centerpiece of the build is a Dynatrac ProRock axle package consisting of a ProRock 44 front axle and ProRock 60 rear axle with 4.88 gearing and air lockers supported by an onboard ARB single compressor. Adams 1350 driveshafts provide additional strength between the drivetrain and upgraded axles. The Dynatrac axles and PSC steering system were professionally installed by RnR Offroad in April/May 2024 at approximately 65,000 miles. The work followed an insurance claim, with the owner choosing to upgrade the Jeep beyond the components insurance was willing to cover. For comparison, the Recon originally left the factory with Dana 44 front and rear axles, Tru-Lok lockers, and 4.10 gearing.
- Synergy Long-Arm Suspension: Rather than relying on a basic lift to clear larger tires, this Recon uses a Synergy long-arm suspension system with approximately 4 in. of lift. The system was professionally installed by World Tour Offroad in Annapolis, Maryland, in 2021 at approximately 45,000 miles. The suspension is complemented by an upgraded track bar and drag link, with the long-arm configuration designed to provide increased articulation while maintaining better suspension geometry as axle travel increases.
- 38s On KMC Beadlocks: The Jeep rides on 38-inch Nitto Ridge Grappler tires mounted to KMC beadlock wheels, providing considerably more ground clearance and tire footprint than the Recon's original LT255/75R17 setup. The current Nitto Ridge Grapplers were installed at approximately 78,000 miles, putting roughly 14,000 miles on the tires based on the Jeep's current mileage. Upgraded brakes have also been installed to help manage the additional rotating mass of the larger wheel-and-tire package.
- PSC Steering Upgrade: Supporting the 38-inch tires and heavy-duty axle package is a PSC Big Bore Adventure Kit. The setup includes the major components of PSC's Adventure Kit with the exception of the hydraulic ram; the steering gear is already ported should a future owner choose to complete a hydro-assist setup. The PSC system was installed alongside the Dynatrac axle package by RnR Offroad at approximately 65,000 miles. Combined with the upgraded track bar and drag link, the steering system addresses an important part of building a JK around tires and axles of this size.
- Armor And Open-Air Setup: Poison Spyder upgrades include fender flares, rocker armor, and rock sliders, adding protection to areas particularly vulnerable during technical trail use. The Jeep also comes with Bestop Core Doors and a Bestop Trektop Premium Glide Slantback soft top, allowing several configurations for open-air driving. Inside, an Alpine X409 head unit modernizes the infotainment system, while Bartact seat covers have been used to protect the factory Recon leather seating.
This build has been developed in stages rather than simply receiving a large lift and oversized tires. The Synergy long-arm suspension was professionally installed at approximately 45,000 miles, followed by the Dynatrac ProRock 44/60 axle package and PSC steering at approximately 65,000 miles, with the current 38-inch Nitto Ridge Grapplers added at approximately 78,000 miles.
Underneath those modifications is a particularly well-equipped factory JK. The Recon package added leather seating with red accents, red seat belts and switches, a power-dome hood, Recon-specific grille and badging, steel bumpers, heavy-duty rock rails, heated front seats, and other model-specific equipment. This example was also equipped with the six-speed manual, Max Tow Package, automatic climate control, and electronic front sway-bar disconnect.
CARFAX identifies the Jeep as a one-owner personal vehicle purchased new in 2017 and subsequently registered in Virginia and Maryland. The report shows an accident in March 2024 involving a rear-end collision, with front and left-side damage and functional damage reported. No structural damage or airbag deployment is reported by CARFAX. The owner subsequently elected to use the insurance repair process as an opportunity to upgrade the axle and steering systems beyond what insurance would cover.
