Early Land Rovers do not need much help being charming, but this 1949 Series One 80-inch takes the appeal several steps further. Offered by Brooklyn Coachworks in Brooklyn, New York, this beautifully restored Australian-market farm truck features its numbers-matching 1.6L petrol engine, RAF blue-gray paint, brown leather seating, and multiple top configurations. It is the kind of restoration that feels polished without erasing the grit that made the original Land Rover special.
  • Series One Background: Introduced in 1948 at the Amsterdam Motor Show, the original Land Rover was designed as a practical agricultural and light industrial vehicle. It was not initially called the Series I. That name came later, after subsequent Series Land Rovers arrived. What began as a utilitarian stopgap for Rover became one of the most important 4×4 designs ever built.
  • 80-Inch Significance: Early 80-inch wheelbase Land Rovers are especially desirable because they represent the beginning of the model line. Their compact proportions, simple aluminum bodywork, and tractor-like controls connect directly to the vehicle’s original purpose as a work tool for farms, estates, and remote industries.
  • Numbers-Matching 1.6L: Power comes from the original 1.6L 4-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a 4-speed manual transmission and two-speed transfer case. A Roamerdrive overdrive has been added, improving road usability while keeping the drivetrain character intact.
  • Brooklyn Coachworks Restoration: This Series One was originally used as a farm truck in Australia before being imported to the United States and restored by Brooklyn Coachworks. The RAF blue-gray finish, brown leather seating, refreshed trim, and clean presentation show a high level of workmanship while preserving the truck’s early Land Rover identity.
  • Multiple Top Options: One of the best parts of this build is its flexibility. It includes a factory hardtop, full soft top, Surrey top, and door tops, giving the next owner several ways to configure the truck depending on season, use, or mood.
Why This Series One? The earliest Land Rovers occupy a special place in 4×4 history. They were simple, agricultural, and never expected to become icons, yet they laid the foundation for decades of Defenders, Range Rovers, and modern Land Rover utility vehicles. A clean 1949 80-inch example with a numbers-matching engine, quality restoration, and multiple top configurations is not just a vintage truck. It is a foundational piece of off-road history.
