ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL SCOUT TRAVELER

“My heartbeat's rhythm is a lonesome sound, just like the rubber turning on the ground, always lost and nowhere bound. I'm just a traveler on this earth, sure as my heart's behind the pocket of my shirt, I'll just keep rolling till I'm in the dirt.”

I’m convinced Chris Stapleton was thinking about this 1977 International Scout II Traveler when he wrote his hit song, “Traveler.” The lyrics are apt and the tone is perfect. Can’t you just picture this thing rolling aimlessly down a well worn dirt road?

The Scout is an off-road vehicle that was produced by International Harvester from 1961 to 1980, a remarkably short run for such a vaunted vehicle. Known for its simplicity and ruggedness, the Scout was created as a Jeep competitor and built out of International Harvester’s Fort Wayne, IN plant. The Scout II was the successor of the Scout 800, and received several noteworthy changes in design, including a new front grille design, electronic ignition, Dana 44 axles, power disc brakes and Saginaw power steering.

Between 1976 and 1980, International Harvester offered the Traveler, which was like a Scout II, but was extended by 18” to 118” in the region between the door and the front of the rear wheel well and included a fiberglass top. This added length further enhanced its seating and cargo capacity, and improved its credentials as an overlander.

Ultimately, the International Harvester strike of 1979–1980 was the death knell of the Scout. This strike by the UAW against the International Harvester company over work rules was the fourth-longest strike of national importance ever held by the UAW and severely impacted the company's financial status. Coinciding with increasing competition from Ford, Jeep and GM, the strike ultimately forced International Harvester to halt production of the Scout in 1980 for good after producing 532,674 examples. Too bad. So sad.
