1980 Jeep CJ-5 Renegade
“Go Anywhere, Do Anything” was Jeep’s slogan that originated from the vehicle’s capabilities as applied in World War II. Today, the slogan adopted by enthusiasts, “It’s a Jeep thing, you wouldn’t understand,” was first coined by Jeep journalist Rick Pewe. But a moto is not enough for this wild crowd and they have also adopted the Jeep Wave and Jeep Ducking, or Duck Duck Jeep, which began with Wranglers and quickly spread to all Jeep models where in rubber ducks are put on Jeeps as a nod from other owners.
For consignment, a 1980 Jeep Renegade CJ5 that has been the beneficiary of some recent upgrades and stands tall on 18-inch beadlock chrome wheels. If an off road toy that’s roadworthy has been on your bucket list, this one is worth a look!
Note: Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public highways in your area
Exterior
The first thing that hits you both visually and if you were standing in the road, is the 3” tubular chrome bumper that is proudly forward and could likely herd cattle off the road. Behind it, Bordeaux paint covers the CJ in shiny two stage application, while bold Renegade decals are applied on the hood in Wild West font to further uphold the pioneer spirit of you, the Jeep owner. The hood latches, hinges, side mirrors, cowl grille, and window hinges are chromed and blend well with the 18-inch Gear wheels, deep dished and beadlocked and wearing Nitto Grappler tires. A soft top and bikini top in camel tan will accompany the vehicle and so will the doors and windows. The paint and metal work is very good and we did not note any flaws.
Interior
Hefty tan vinyl bucket seats occupy the front and provide a comfortable perch while the rear bench is a bit more adventurous, and the roll bar is padded and dressed in a tan cover. A beefy steering wheel fronts a simple dash where a chrome dress plate houses the gauges, AM/FM/CD radio, and temp control knobs. Just below a fuel gauge has been mounted to the dash which is all topped with a tan dash pad. The shifter and range selector are floor mounted, surrounded by low pile black carpet and Jeep branded floor mats, all in great shape. What would a road trip be without a center console with storage bin and cup holders and this rig has it!
Drivetrain
Popping the hood reveals a very clean AMC 304ci V8 topped by a newer Street Demon 625 cfm 4-barrel carburetor. Behind it, a rebuilt Tremec T176 4-speed manual transmission and a Dana 300 transfer case send power to the axles. The rear differential is an AMC 20 with 3.07 gears and the front is equipped with a Dana 30 in the same ratio. Disc brakes are up front and drums out back. Hedman headers send burnt fuel on its way.
Undercarriage
We’re getting the feeling this rig hasn’t been offroad lately and maybe that’s fully the intent. The underside is very clean with just hints of surface rust, a few drops of oil on the pan and flywheel cover, and really no build up grease, grime, or mud anywhere. The short exhaust goes from the headers directly into glasspack style mufflers and then side exiting before the rear wheels. There are no catalytic converters. Leaf spring suspension is found both front and rear.
Drive-Ability
Short exhaust makes for a big sound! The CJ rumbles out of the garage and on to the test loop where plenty of power is on tap and the mile high ride provides great visibility and the knobby tires stay on track. Everything works on this clean machine with the exception of the reverse lights. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
A Renegade is a person who deserts a set of principles, and the show quality of this Jeep belies the Go Anywhere, Do Anything moto, but no one has to know you keep it clean. You will still be regarded as a wild one, a risk taker, an adventurer, because this Jeep will do the talking for you. It’s a beauty and we see many ducks and waves in your future.
