She may look like a large caterpillar, but this 1988 Toyota HiAce 4x4 floats like a butterfly over all types of terrain. A genuine joy to drive, with an iconic profile that captures attention no matter what roads you travel down, we always slide out of the driver's seat with a smile on our faces.
In fact — we've been searching for almost a decade to find a clean left-hand driver 4x4 Toyota HiAce and this is the first we've been able to source. Car Cave purchased this van from Switzerland where it had been owned by a Mr Louis of Bernex for the past 26 years. History documents show the HiAce was first registered on January 8, 1988 in Switzerland, where it spent its entire life. As country known to be notoriously strict on their annual technical control inspections, this vehicle has been kept in immaculate condition. We have record of services scheduled all the way back to 1999.
The beautiful red exterior is complemented by the large windows that give every passenger a nearly panoramic view. Black steps, bumpers, mudflaps, and other vehicle details contrast the bright body. Currently, the vehicle sits atop Barum Vanis 2 195/75 R16C tires, wrapped around 16" wheels. The tow hitch with plug for trailer controls is an aftermarket addition. Powered by a 4Y 2000cc engine paired to a 5-speed manual transmission with a hi/low transfer case and limited slip rear end, this vehicle has an advertised 94 horsepower. Surprisingly, behind the wheel 94 horses feel like a whole lot more, and the HiAce cruises down the road. The front wheels sport AISIN Hubs, typical in part-time 4WD applications.
The interior of this HiAce is nothing short of spacious. The driver and passenger seats are separate and clad in a rich brown vinyl, matching the front door cards. A temperature gauge and a water temperature gauge feature prominently on the dash. Manual windows, manual locks, and an old-school Clarion CRX55 cassette and radio bring you right back to 1988. A glove box up and central open cubby provide storage for miscellaneous paperwork and needed items. The interior dome lights, some added after the factory floor, provide illumination to every corner of the interior.

The rear free-standing bench seat gives passengers access to slide open the back windows and take the fresh air. Cloth door cards adorn both sliding rear doors. A simple seating solution to bring folks along for the ride, the rear bench is a prelude to the actually tremendous amount of rear storage space.
Car Cave recently performed maintenance on this Hi-Ace replacing a tail light and headlight, changing the battery, and replacing the wiring to the distributor. It was delivered to us in exceptional running condition. Service records will be provided upon request.
