Overview
We imported a spectrum of Prado Land Cruisers, and this 1992 RJ77 LX is a great middle of the road example as a clean driver-quality vehicle. It’s been well preserved in Oman’s desert climate, and well taken care of overall by its previous owners despite showing a few signs of age after 34 years on this planet. If you’re looking for a Prado that you can drive every day, or build into your ultimate wheelin’ rig, this might be a great start into the Land Cruiser life.
As an LX, the base model, you do have a slightly simpler interior with Toyota’s 60/40 split bench seat, simpler dash layout without the gauge pod, though it does have optional power windows and locks. The interior has some age to it, but is complete overall and in good shape with working HVAC.
Outside, this RJ77 is a good driver-quality truck. The paint has some imperfections from a respray by the previous owner (still in the original Light Beige Metallic), which is documented in our walk-around, but the sheet metal is overall rust-free and straight. Especially around the rear pop-out quarter windows, which typically rub through the paint and start a rust stop, is clean and wear-free.
Mechanically it’s one of Toyota’s most popular engine packages, the venerable 22R 2.4L four-cylinder, an engine that has powered millions of Toyotas here in the US. Parts availability and knowledge here in the states is plentiful, making owning and maintaining the powertrain easier than some of the cool, but less common diesel options in our inventory. Our only major update was switching over to a 2bbl Webber carburetor, otherwise everything is original. Underneath, 8-inch Toyota axles are stuffed with 4.56 gears and open four-pinion diffs (G254 axle code). Prados also came with coil spring/radius arm suspension compared to the more typical leaf sprung suspension found on many 70-series Toyotas, offering better ride and handling.
