The military-spec AM General M998 HMMWV is about as purpose-built as a 4x4 gets, but this 1993 example has been extensively upgraded to address many of the compromises that come with owning a stock surplus truck. Offered by a private seller in Poway, California, it pairs its original 6.2-liter diesel V8, portal axles, inboard brakes, and two-speed transfer case with a turbocharger, rebuilt four-speed automatic, upgraded cooling system, custom steel enclosure, air conditioning, and a long list of modern electrical and interior upgrades. Better still, it carries a clean California title and is currently street-legal in the state.
  • Turbocharged 6.2-Liter Diesel: The 6.2-liter diesel V8 has been upgraded with a BMI Commander 6200 Turbo Kit, along with a Forge Motorsport high-flow intake and exhaust system. A custom auxiliary gauge pod keeps tabs on boost, oil temperature, and transmission pressure. It’s a substantial departure from the naturally aspirated setup found in a standard M998 and one of the more consequential upgrades on this truck.
  • Rebuilt 700R4 Four-Speed: Behind the diesel is a rebuilt 700R4 four-speed automatic transmission, adding an overdrive gear to a platform originally designed around much lower road speeds. Power is sent to all four wheels through a two-speed transfer case, with the M998 retaining its military portal axles and inboard brakes.
  • Upgraded Cooling & Electrical Systems: Supporting the modified drivetrain is a rear-cylinder cooling balance kit, high-flow radiator, heavy-duty mechanical thermostatic fan clutch, high-efficiency fan blade, auxiliary engine-oil cooler, and auxiliary transmission-fluid cooler. Electrical upgrades include a high-output alternator and heavy-duty waterproof 24V-to-12V, 100-amp/1,200-watt converter to support the truck’s added civilian equipment.
  • Custom Steel Hardtop & Doors: Instead of the standard soft-sided military enclosure, this M998 wears a custom-fabricated 1/8-inch steel hardtop with matching full steel doors. Extensive Second Skin Damplifier Pro sound-deadening material has also been installed beneath the rubber flooring and throughout the cabin to help reduce the noise and vibration inherent to the military platform. Portions of the doors and interior remain utilitarian in finish, leaving room for further cosmetic finishing if desired.
  • Vintage Air & Modern Technology: Vintage Air air conditioning is a particularly welcome addition to an enclosed HMMWV. The cabin also features a 10.33-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a six-channel 1080p dash-cam and backup-camera system, and a custom center jump seat. Together with the steel enclosure and sound deadening, these upgrades make this a considerably more civilian-friendly setup than a stock M998.
Starting with a basic surplus M998 and recreating this combination of upgrades would mean tackling the drivetrain, cooling, electrical system, cabin enclosure, climate control, sound insulation, and electronics separately. Much of that work has already been done here, while the underlying truck retains the military hardware that makes an M998 so distinctive in the first place.

The clean California title is another meaningful part of the package. Former military vehicles can present titling and registration challenges, and this example is currently street-legal in California. Buyers elsewhere should still verify their own state’s emissions, inspection, titling, and registration requirements before purchase.

This isn't presented as a restored Hummer H1 or a cosmetically perfect show truck. It retains exterior blemishes and signs of its military history, visible sealant around portions of the custom door frames, wear on interior touch points, patches on the driver's seat, and unfinished areas of the custom doors and headliner.
