Mercedes SK1824: Livable Luxury, And So Damn Gritty.
The 1994 Mercedes-Benz 1824 is a cabover chassis, SK class truck. SK class trucks, or Schwere Klasse which translates to “heavy class,” were produced from 1989 through 1998. The SK was a revamped Mercedes-Benz NG with some added driver comforts and electronic assistance and diagnosis tools, making it a more comfortable, capable and reliable truck. In 1994, the SK got a new front end design that gave it better aerodynamics, leading to better fuel efficiency.
This particular SK has been restored and customized by the artists at Acme Overland, a Salt Lake City-based expedition vehicle builder and customizer. Founded in 2016, Acme Overland is a family-owned company that does some incredibly dynamic builds primarily on the Mercedes Sprinter van platform, but also SK class trucks and, well, you should really see what they did with this Honda Acty.
This Mercedes-Benz expedition truck has a total length of 23 feet four inches with a wheelbase of 156”, a width of 8 feet and a height of 12 feet six inches. The cabin, or habitat as Acme calls it, is 16 feet long with a height of 7’ 3”, plenty of room unless you’re Manute Bol or Gheorghe Mureșan. If so, this might not work.
Acme reports that this rig easily cruises at 62-65 miles per hour and gets on average about 10 miles per gallon of gasoline. It’s seen 150,000 miles in its lifetime, or about 5,400 per year, and throughout its lifetime it has been extremely reliable. They add that it’s quite mechanical/analog and thus easy to troubleshoot and service if something does happen to go wrong.
