Don’t let the shine and the pristine condition of this one fool you, this is one mean XJ. For sale by Hanksters Hot Rods in Homer City, PA, this 1996 Jeep Cherokee has been built to the nines with equipment from Bilstein, Teraflex, Warn, Eaton, PIAA and more. While the $19,900 price tag is north of the average cost for an XJ according to Classic.com, given its condition and extensive build list, we think this will go quickly. If your search is for a classic Jeep that looks brand new and is legitimately trail-ready, we recommend grabbing this XJ and taking it to play in the mud.

The Model.

Back before SUVs were called SUVs, Jeep marketed the iconic XJ series as a “sportwagon.” While we’re glad the sportwagon moniker didn’t stick, we’re super grateful they brought the XJ to market. And so it seems is the entire automotive industry, given that it’s been heaped with praise over and over and over again. Here are a few examples:

  • The 2007 book Jeep Off-Road called the XJ a "significant link in the evolution of the 4x4.
  • In 2011 Kiplinger magazine selected the XJ as one of the "cars that refuse to die."
  • Automotive journalist Robert Cumberford, writing for Automobile, called the Jeep XJ one of the 20 greatest cars of all time — for its design, and "possibly the best SUV shape of all time, it is the paradigmatic model to which other designers have since aspired."

Couldn’t possibly agree more.

This particular XJ was of the “Country” trim, which was offered between the years of 1993 and 1997. It came with an upgraded color-keyed pinstripe and the option for "champagne" gold along with silver as accent options, cloth-and-vinyl ("luggage fabric") upholstery with leather option, faux mahogany-wood interior accents and lace-spoke wheels. It came with a AM/FM radio with cassette player and four speakers, but buyers had the option to upgrade to six Jensen AccuSound speakers. Country trim offered optional overhead console, remote keyless entry (if equipped with power locks), optional dual power seats, and air conditioning.

The Specs.

We’ve featured XJs on Fourbie Exchange, including a nearly $60,000 fully custom beast from Davis Auto Sports, but this is definitely one of our favorites. At its foundation, it’s a gorgeous 96 Jeep Cherokee that is in remarkable condition for its age, including its beautiful dark green metallic paint and by the looks of the seller photos, the interior and undercarriage as well. Building on that foundation, it has been extensively modified including a ton of great parts focused on off-road performance, utility, interior comfort and sound and aesthetics.

This beaut also comes with a completed CA smog test, a well-worn Haynes manual, and service records and receipts from 1996 to 2018.
