About the Toyota J100 Land Cruiser.

Introduced for the 1998 model year, the 100-Series Toyota Land Cruiser was a dynamic mix of performance, technology advancements, and features. There were two difference variations of the 100-Series: the 100, and the 105.

While both looked the same, the 105 was a closer descendant of the J80 predecessor. It was powered by an I6 gas or diesel motor, and available in just about every market except North America. Additionally, it featured a more rugged assembly, including solid front and rear axles.

Conversely, the Land Cruiser 100 like these were offered in North America only and powered by a 4.7L V8 gas-powered engine, the 2UZ-FE. While the 100 was a more comfort-oriented evolution of the J100 in contrast to the 105, featuring independent front suspension (first for a Land Cruiser), a wider chassis, and rack-and-pinion steering, it was still a formidable off-road machine. It could take abuse on the most inhospitable terrain, then make it back in time to pick the kids up from school in total comfort.

The 4.7L V8 was the first V8 offered in a Land Cruiser and produced 230 hp. (275 hp. starting in 2006 with the addition of VVT-i). It was mated to a four-speed automatic, with a five-speed automatic supplanting it for the 2003 model year. In lieu of lockers, traction and stability control systems were added in 2000 - much to the chagrin of hardcore off-roaders.
