1970 International Harvester Scout 800A

FOR SALE: $44,000 | AMERICAN VINTAGE 4WD | WARSAW, IN

We’re fans of any Scout. But we really, really love all original survivor Scouts that are chock-full of patina goodness like this one for sale from American Vintage 4WD. It’s a 1970 International Harvester Scout 800A clad in unspeakably cool looking classic gold and sporting only 51,000 original miles. You can drive it home for $44,000.

It’s hard to take your eyes off the aforementioned patina, but once you do, you’ll notice that this 800A is a rust-free example with an original 304 cubic inch V8 motor, sharp looking white wheels with new knobby tires and newly upholstered original seats. It’s recently had a significant amount of regular maintenance, which makes it just the perfect driver. And with just 51,000 miles on it, it’s just getting broken in.

AN ORIGINAL PATINA 1970 IH SCOUT 800A

The legend of the International Harvester Scout started in 1960 with the 1961 Scout 80, which was IH’s effort to compete with the immensely popular Jeep CJ. In 1965, the Scout 80 was replaced by its successor, the Scout 800 series. The 800 had a number of improvements inside and out including some new, but familiar sheet metal, bucket seats, better instruments and heating systems, updated dashboard, and new engine options.

In 1969, the 800 was replaced by the 800A. The 800A gave you everything you loved about the Scout 800, only nicer. It improved on the 800s comfort and convenience, but also included a slightly different front fascia, some drivetrain upgrades and some new motor options–including the 304 cubic inch V8 that powers this example.

Anything wearing a Scout badge is hot right now. Values have gone up significantly over the last couple years, so you’re not going to get one cheap right now unless it’s a real heap. You’re also going to see a bunch of Scouts that have been painstakingly restored into show quality specimens. This one falls right in the middle of those two extremes, which aligns with it being priced just a shade under the Classic.com 1-year rolling average sale of $49,958.

The Specs & Condition

According to American Vintage 4WD, this Scout has lived in California its entire life, which explains why it has some light surface patina, but no rust issues. It’s also been through a significant amount of recent service.
