If we could pick any 1982 Toyota Land Cruiser BJ40, this might be the one. The team at Legacy Overland in Ridgefield, Connecticut recently completed a comprehensive nut-and-bolt, frame-off restomod, and while it looks like a million bucks, it was offered for sale for $135,000.

This BJ40 has been upgraded with a Toyota 1HD-T 4.2L turbo diesel inline-six sourced from the 80-Series Land Cruiser. Legacy Overland paired the modern diesel with thoughtful upgrades including power steering, disc brakes, modern air conditioning, and suspension components from Old Man Emu. The result is a classic short-wheelbase Land Cruiser that retains its vintage charm while gaining modern drivability and capability.

The Model
The Toyota Land Cruiser 40 Series is widely considered one of the most iconic off-road vehicles ever built. Known for its durability, simple mechanical design, and exceptional off-road capability, the Land Cruiser quickly earned a reputation for reliability that helped establish Toyota as a global automotive brand.

The Land Cruiser’s origins trace back to the early 1950s when Toyota developed a rugged four-wheel-drive vehicle inspired by military utility trucks. The result evolved into the J-Series Land Cruiser, which included BJ, FJ, and HJ variants.

Within the naming convention, the letter indicated the engine type.
  •  FJ models used gasoline-powered six-cylinder engines,
  •  BJ models used diesel four-cylinder engines,
  •  and HJ models used diesel inline-six engines.
These vehicles were traditional body-on-frame 4×4 SUVs, most commonly built as two-door models slightly larger than competitors like the Jeep CJ. They were offered in several wheelbase configurations, with the “40” designation referring to the short-wheelbase model that became the most recognizable version of the Land Cruiser.
