If we could have any 1982 Toyota Land Cruiser BJ40, it would be this 1982 Toyota Land Cruiser BJ40. The team at Legacy Overland out of Ridgefield, Connecticut recently completed this nut and bolt, frame-off restomod, and even though it looks like a million bucks, they’d be happy to sell it to you for just $135,000.
They’ve outfitted this BJ with a powerful Turbo Diesel 1HD-T 4.2L 6-cylinder motor from an 80 series Land Cruiser, and then added some choice restomod touches like power steering, disc brakes, modern air conditioning and suspension bits from Old Man Emu. The result is a stunning looking rig that can take you pretty much anywhere you want to go.
I mean seriously, would you just…look at it? :: swoon ::
The Model.
The Toyota Land Cruiser is without a shred of doubt one of the GOAT fourbies, and for good reason. Not only was it ahead of its time in terms of off-road capability, but it was a market leader in reliability. And since it was Toyota’s first model available for sale in the United States, it helped build Toyota’s reputation for rugged reliability that still stands.
We won’t get too deep into the history of this model here, but it’s a pretty insane story that involves WWII, an abandoned military Jeep, and a healthy dose of reverse engineering. Read all about it over at Silodrome, who covered it beautifully on their site.
The J-Series—which included BJ, FJ, and HJ models—were traditional body-on-frame SUVs mostly built as 2-door models slightly larger than its competitor the Jeep CJ. The F denoted the rig with the 6-cylinder gasoline motor, the B was 4-cylinder diesel, and the H series was a 6-cylinder diesel. The model was available in short, medium and long wheelbase versions, with the 40 denoting a short wheelbase.
