otherWhether you’re new to overlanding or deciding on the vehicle for your next trip, we can personally say a Toyota Land Cruiser is hands down the vehicle of choice, especially one you can hang out inside on cold, rainy, and windy nights. This one has proven it. In nine months it carried two people and a dog 30,000 km from London to Cape Town, through 19 African countries, and it’s ready to do it again. Every 30-year-old Land Cruiser needs maintenance. What matters is whether it’s been done and documented, and on this one it has. Since we’ve owned it, this Troopy has been properly looked after, with over £7,500 of recent mechanical work using genuine Toyota or Terrain Tamer parts, a lanolin undercoat every year, and minimal rust. It turns over beautifully, even on cold mornings. Receipts are available for all work.
It’s just as comfortable inside. The rear cavities are fully insulated with 3M Thinsulate, including the full wings with EZ Cool, so it’s warm and ready for cold nights. It’s also well ventilated, and condensation has never been an issue, in hot or cold climates. Why It Works
This Troopy was chosen for its character and built for the toughest, most remote terrain. It’s all mechanical, simple, and easy to fix almost anywhere in the world, with no complicated electronics to fail far from help. Nothing on it was bought to look good in a car park. Every item was chosen, fitted, and then proven across a continent of sand, corrugations, altitude, and heat. If you’re starting out, that means you’re not buying someone’s untested ideas. You’re buying a setup that’s already done the miles.
The roof was cut by Nene Overland for an Alu-Cab Hercules pop-top with a 270° awning. With the custom-made cushions you can sit inside with the roof down, which is handy on wet or windy days.
The rear has custom-built cabinetry (2025), EMU gullwings on all four windows, all on one key, and Alu-Cab molle plates on the doors, so everything has a place and nothing rattles. Dodo Mat sound deadening keeps the cabin quiet on long drives, and the Scheel-Mann front seats keep you comfortable over long days. Off-grid power comes from a 150 W roof-mounted solar panel feeding a Victron MPPT controller and inverter. An Eberspächer diesel heater handles cold nights, and an Alpicool drawer fridge keeps food cold.
Up front there’s an ARB bumper with an installed front recovery point, Hella spotlights, a snorkel, and a Warn 9.5XP winch with 100 ft of Spydura synthetic rope. It rolls on BF Goodrich 265/75s on steel wheels, and an ARB on-board compressor lets you drop and reinflate tyre pressures for sand and tracks.
Mechanical Condition
A 1HZJ doesn’t need much. It needs the right things done at the right time, and that’s how we’ve looked after this one. OEM oil and fuel filters have been changed every 8,000 km, and the underside gets a lanolin undercoat every year to protect the chassis. We used genuine Toyota or Terrain Tamer parts throughout.

This isn’t a bare truck with a price on the windscreen. It’s handed over loaded with recovery gear, camp kit, and safety equipment, so you can get going straight away without spending months and thousands kitting it out. Only missing a driver.
