The KZJ73 shown here is an excellent example of our favorite 70 Series showing the original factory color which was resprayed in Light Beige Metallic (Toyota Paint Code 4K1). Light Beige Metallic is a rare and unique color for a 70 series Land Cruiser which contrasts against the white fiberglass removable FRP Top. The KZJ73 was only built for the European market for 3 years, making it treasured and hard to find. We enjoy driving this model due to the smooth riding coil springs (in comparison to the leaf springs on the BJ, FJ, FZJ, and HZJ) and engine with lots of pep. We just took this KZJ73 on a 4 day road trip to Windrock, TN with some of the 70 Series posse. It performed great both on the interstate and trail.
This 1994 Toyota Land Cruiser KZJ73 is a left-hand-drive European-spec model sold new in Southern France on October, 28, 1994. Car Cave purchased this LC from Monsieur Baptiste, located in Aste, France. Astes is located in the Hautes-Pyrenees region which borders Spain. The region is known for dry climate being on the same latitude as Spain and Italy, and dry climates are great for classics.
Europe was the only market lucky enough to receive the left-hand-drive, coil-sprung KZJ73 equipped with the 1KZ-T engine—our favorite 70 Series platform. The 1KZ-T (as opposed to the 1KZ-TE) features the sought-after mechanical injection pump and was built without an EGR valve—a major advantage when tuning and for keeping exhaust gas temperatures down.

The 1994 Toyota Land Cruiser recently underwent a comprehensive round of service and maintenance. Work included an engine oil and filter change, new fuel filter, and replacement of the engine air filter. The brake system was bled at all four wheels, along with a clutch bleed, ensuring refreshed hydraulic performance. A valve cover gasket was installed, the crankshaft front oil seal was replaced, and the lower oil pan gasket was renewed. The valves were adjusted, and both front and rear differentials were drained and filled with fresh fluid. Additional items included a new intake gasket, oil plug washer, battery terminals, washer hoses, and fresh 10w30 engine oil. The service was rounded out with new 18-inch wiper blades and fresh 75w90 gear oil. To improve drivability and reliability, electrical work included battery terminal replacement and a review of the ARB Air Compressor. Finally, the Land Cruiser was fitted with a new set of 31×10.50R15 Kenda Klever MT2 tires, mounted and balanced, ensuring the truck is ready for both on-road and off-road use. There are some oil leaks from the engine and gearboxes as with any 31 year old diesel. The Land Cruiser completed a 13 hour road trip and 3 days of light (green) trail use without needing additional fluid. Meaning the leaks are present but not problematic.
A 3.0L turbo diesel powers this Land Cruiser, mated to a five-speed manual transmission and a two-speed transfer case. The smooth-running, ultra-reliable Toyota 1KZ-T is a 2,982cc single overhead cam, indirect injection turbo diesel. The timing belt has been replaced recently. The factory front hubs were factory push button activated and now converted to a more reliable AVN manual hub. The transfer case is high range push-button 4WD and a floor-shifted transfer case for low-range situations.
Aftermarket upgrades on this Land Cruiser are minimal, limited to a tape player, steel tubular rear bumper, ARB air compressor, and trailer ball in the rear—which is just fine by us, as the KZJ73 drives exceptionally well in stock form both on and off-road. The previous owner removed the ARB air locker (switch on the dash). Underneath the FRP top is a factory-integrated roll cage, allowing rear passengers to enjoy the safety of three-point seatbelts. The grey carpets and Grey Moon Mist cloth interior have some imperfections. The driver’s seat does have a tear on the bottom cushion, the rear carpets have been removed, and the cargo area door cards and trim have wear from use
Factory options include power locks (not working), power steering, a center console, power windows, tilt steering wheel, rear barn doors, rear wiper, digital clock, and rear defrost. The original factory Toyota altimeter and inclinometer are still present. The vehicle is currently fitted with 31×10.50×15 Kenda Klever MT2 tires mounted on the factory 15″ chrome wheels.
The removable top and integrated roll cage make this a versatile platform, and several aftermarket suppliers offer soft top kits to further customize this vehicle. The windshield also folds down onto the hood—perfect for a throwback overlanding experience with the wind in your face. Car Cave is extremely familiar with 70 Series Land Cruisers and can modify them to suit any vision.
