1996 Mitsubishi Delica Space Gear Super Exceed

SOLD  $12,500 | VANS FROM JAPAN | SACRAMENTO, CA

As far as car names go, it just doesn’t get much cooler than “Mitsubishi Delica Space Gear Super Exceed.” But the car is every bit as cool as the name in this case. This 1996 model with a little over 110,000 miles is for sale from the Vans from Japan team in Sacramento, California for just $14,000. It has an incredible interior with seating for 7, Mitsubishi’s Crystal Lite panoramic roof, a torquey intercooled turbo diesel engine and Super Select 4WD with high and low ranges, all making it one hell of an overlander.

This one’s going to be coveted, so act accordingly.

ABOUT THE MITSUBISHI DELICA SPACE GEAR

We love the Mitsubishi Delica so much, we don’t even try to hide it. In fact, the 1992 Delica L300 Chamonix that sold earlier this year is still one of our favorite features, and one of our most popular posts on Instagram

This mighty little Mitsubishi Delica is a range of vans and pickup trucks designed and built by Mitsubishi Motors, first offered to the public in 1968. Up until 1994, it was a boxy rig with a mid-front engine layout, with the power plant hiding neatly under the passenger seat. Then, in 1994, Mitsubishi ushered in the 4th generation Delica, which is what this particular model is.

The 4th generation Delica was considerably less boxy and much more aerodynamic than its predecessor. It also came with a new moniker in Japan: Delica Space Gear. Such an insanely great name. Trim levels of the Space Gear ranged from XR, XG, Exceed, Super Exceed and Royal Exceed. Both long and short wheelbase versions were available.

In 1996, the Delica was upgraded with a facelift with cosmetic changes to the lighting clusters and front body panels, including a molded bumper in place of the original 3-section bullbar and an electronic sidestep (only on high-end trim models). The engine was also upgraded with an electronic control type distribution type jet pump, helping the intercooled turbo diesel power plant produce 123 horsepower at 4000 rpm and a healthy 217 lb ft of torque at 2000 rpm.

The Specs.

This Space Gear Super Exceed has recently been imported from Japan by the Vans from Japan team. After landing on the west coast, they gave it a good once over, including an oil change with Amsoil Signature Series Max-Duty Synthetic Diesel 10w-30 oil, a new oil filter, new fuel filter, new air filter, Amsoil Diesel Injector Clean + Cetane Boost treatment (as preventative maintenance), and a set of new Rain-X Weatherbeater wiper blades in the front and rear.

While this thing is in excellent shape for its age and mileage, The Vans from Japan team have clearly outlined that this Super Exceed isn’t perfect. They report the following issues, many of which are also detailed in the 100 or so seller provided photos.

  • Pulls slightly to the right
  • Clock is non-functioning
  • Key does not work in the passenger door lock
  • Rust bubbling above the windshield (pictured)
  • Roof and bull bar have been repainted (amateur quality with brush marks)
