1973 International Harvester Scout II For Sale

SOLD  $54,000 | GATEWAY CLASSIC CARS | HOUSTON, TX

Loaded with the beastly 345 CID V8, this Tiffany Blue '73 International Scout II is offered for sale by Gateway Classic Cars in Houston, TX for $54,000. It's a driver-quality example that has been nicely rejuvenated to provide comfort and peace-of-mind as a cool and capable cruiser or light off-roader, yet has the cosmetic enhancements completed to rightfully demand attention wherever it chooses to roam.

We are seeing more and more Scouts at the top and bottom ends of the spectrum: fully-restored show ponies at one one, and project-ready (to say it nicely) at the other. Finding one that has been thoughtfully restored, yet not overly done, is a sweet-spot that this '73 Scout II hits nicely.

ABOUT THE IH SCOUT II.

Back in the early 60s, off-road-ready SUVs were starting to take the U.S. market by storm. Fueled by the success of more primitive and purpose-built Jeeps, Land Cruiser, and an emerging consumer market for factory-equipped 4x4 trucks, International Harvester offered the Scout for the 1962 model year. Of course, this segment continued to explode with additional entries like the Ford Bronco, Chevrolet Blazer, and Dodge Ramcharger.

International Harvester may have been more known in the construction and agricultural space, but the Scout was hardly their first foray in mass-market automotive. IH had cranked out light-duty trucks since the 40s and created a Suburban-fighting mega SUV in the Travelall in the 50s.

Scout II was first offered for 1971, a revised generation aiming to keep relevance in a fast-evolving segment. They were offered in 4WD and 2WD - this example being the former - and a series of powerplants ranging from I4s to V8s, naturally-aspirated and turbocharged diesels.

The Scout II was a fun and powerful SUV that helped define a generation of big, bold off-roaders that brought the thunder as a challenger to more established manufacturers. What the Scout II lacked in options and customization options, it made up for in special edition packages like the Selective Edition, Shawnee Scout, Spirit of 76, and Midas Edition.

Unfortunately, the last Scout II was produced in October, 1980 as International Harvester strategically withdrew from the mass-market automotive segment to streamline operations and costs, primarily due to a massive strike at the end of 1979. Business units were either closed or sold before rebranding to Navistar International, which focused on producing engines.

With it's general rarity and a boom in the classic 4x4 SUVs market, the Scout II today has been targeted by collectors and enthusiasts alike. In turn, valuations have rocketed over the past five years in a way that's outpaced the broader 4x4 / Truck segment with a current moving average of approximately $38k, up from approximately $26k in Q1 2018. We also see the volume of transactions skyrocket.

However, the moving average is generally skewed by the top-end sales with examples pulling north of $100k, like this incredible and comprehensively-restored L96-powered '73 Scout II that sold last year. But, we also see more project-ready variations pulling up from the bottom, as well.

Finding a quality example that is both ready to drive, yet still at (relative) approachable costs is a sweet-spot, which is where this example comes in. It'll serve well as a weekend cruiser - a favorite at your local cars & coffee - and you won't feel quite as nervous about the mileage.

The Specs & Condition

Low on frills, high on thrills: just the way we like our classic 4x4s. This '73 Scout II may not have the modern conveniences like Bluetooth, navigation, Bose audio, or, heck, even airbags, but if cruising down the interstate with the top off listening to that V8 purr doesn't put a smile on your face, this probably isn't the rig for you. It's a well-restored yet driver-quality example that will serve you well for as a weekend companion with spirit.
