1979 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ45: The Best 40 Series TLC.

Ah, the iconic 40 Series Toyota Land Cruiser. We can’t be sure, but we think it’s what inspired Toyota’s “Let’s Go Places” tagline. While the Land Cruiser officially got its start in 1951, the 40 Series is where the name earned its cachet. Manufactured by Toyota from 1960 all the way through 2001 in some markets, the Land Cruiser J40 (FJ40 denotes a gasoline engine, BJ40 indicates a diesel motor) is a traditional body-on-frame truck that was mostly built as 2-door models in short (J40/41/42), medium (J43/44/46) and long (J45/47) wheelbase versions–this model represents a long-wheelbase version, which afforded Toyota to build it in a utilitarian pickup truck configuration.

In terms of value, let’s go to the data (via Classic.com). Bolstered by the fact that they’re freaking awesome, and pretty rare, FJ45 auctions and sales over the last 12 months have been increasing steadily to an average hammer/sale price of $58,753. Within that range, which you can explore via the widget below, there have been a couple of notable sales, including a mind-boggling $168,000 hammer price at an RM Sotheby’s auction in August of 2021. Buy this one and feel great about it.

The Specs & Condition.

Worldwide Cruisers purchased this beauty in April 2021 and has spent the last year restoring the absolute crap out of it. They’ve reportedly put well over $40,000 into the restoration, and it’s absolutely wonderful. Everything nut and bolt has been addressed, both inside and out and in between, including a rebuild of the legendary 2F inline 6 cylinder engine. The only thing that isn’t as-delivered-from-the-factory is the ZESUPER 4WD 9500 lb winch mounted to the front bumper and the brand new Rancho shock absorbers. The original miles are unknown, but it really doesn’t matter because this is essentially a brand new truck!

Here are some of the specs and highlights:

  • 4-speed manual transmission
  • 2-speed transfer case
