No, it won’t win you any drag races, and it certainly doesn’t coddle you like a Lexus, but this one-owner 1992 Land Cruiser is an enthusiast’s fever dream. Finished in a fresh coat of Toyota White (045), this one-owner J77 is set off by a refinished set of 17″ steel wheels, a useful roof ladder, and a stylish roof basket. Aside from a few minor imperfections, the body is in good shape, and this special SUV is offered with a mere 68k verified and documented miles on the clock. Featuring a nearly indestructible diesel five-cylinder and a manual gearbox, this terrific Toyota would make for a unique daily driver, wicked wheeler, or decent dedicated overlander. Freshly serviced, a heavy-duty, capable, and reliable Japanese Classic like this is hard to beat, and is highly collectible, too!
Interior Overview
The cabin is simple, spacious and in above average shape overall. Unlike most every 70 we see, this one lacks the traditional dash cracks which can be a bit unsightly. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column, and the tall ride height is great for visibility, as you can see traffic and the road ahead. The center stack is close by and includes functional heat, A/C, and an AM radio. Manual locks and crank windows are one less thing to break, and the vinyl floor will be resistant to spills and stains. The seats are trimmed in gray leather. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears, and the rear bench can fold flat to increase the cargo area. The headliner is in good shape, as are the door cards, and there is loads of head, leg, and shoulder room for five folks. The instrumentation is clear and easy to read, and as an added bonus for the next owner, both the original owner’s manual and maintenance booklets are included.
Mechanical Overview
This body-on-frame beast is able to withstand torturous environments and rough terrain. The same can be said for the engine, the 1PZ. This diesel churns to life with the twist of the key, and two new batteries bolster the 24v charging system. Fresh off an oil and filter service, we added some new accessory belts, a new engine air filter, and a new fuel filter as part of our tune-up. The five-cylinder is linked to a five-speed manual gearbox. It delivers more control over the chassis than a slushbox-equipped model and shifts lack any hitches or grinds. We have bolstered the driveline with a front and rear differential fluid service, and we have also serviced the transfer case with new gear oil. This J77 cruises well in 2WD and 4WD can be clicked in when desired. Manual locking front hubs are also handy for when you traverse on loose surfaces. While it was on the lift, we also replaced a leaky transfer case output seal, too! It gets up to highway-merging speeds just fine, and when you need to slow down, front disc brakes have you covered. We have flushed the brake fluid and added new front calipers and pads to keep things that way. The steering is power-assisted, and this truck is easy to maneuver about. The long wheelbase distributes road imperfections nicely, and new front and rear shocks have been installed to refresh the ride quality. For state inspection, we installed new front sway bar end links and performed a fresh alignment so that the new Falken 31″ all-terrain tires last as long as possible. This lovable Landy only needs a new owner, as it’s turn-key and ready to roll!
