Standout SUVs in todays market are few and far betwen, at best. Most manufacturers focus on luxury over usability and limit consumer choices to the highest spec, most expensive vehicles around and still miss the mark. Toyota’s 3rd Generation Hilux Surf, however, gave you more than what meets the eye. Trim packages that make sense, features that you’ll use almost everytime you drive, and an appearance that you just don’t forget. Dependability, usability, and overall drivability are factors that you can often only find 2/3 in todays market, but Toyota made sure that the Surf had a perfect blend of all 3.

Noticeably, the body styling is nearly identical to what the USDM would refer to as a 4Runner, and many parts do cross reference, meaning maintenance won’t be a constant headache. Where this Surf differs, however, is in its powerplant. Under the hood sits the well respected 3.0L 1KZ-TE Turbo Diesel engine that, while it was only produced for the Japanese market, were sold in nearly every country BUT the United States due to the 25 year law. Engine specific parts are easy to come by, with many orderable through dealerships, online parts sources, or overseas distrbutors. Paired with a well geared 4 Speed Auto and selectable 4WD system, it’s an extremely capable truck with a do-anything attitude.

Hopping inside, the Hilux doesn’t make promises that it can’t keep. Features are actually usable, such as a Power Rear Under Mirror, Selectable Suspension Dampening modes, Idle Up Control, Power Windows, Power Mirrors, Power Door Locks, Tilt Steering Wheel, Front and Rear Cupholders, Cold A/C and Hot Heat, and the infamous Power Rear Window that 4Runner enthusiasts love. Cosmetic upgrades such as the tan leather seat covers were added, while wood grain trim is a factory found feature that adds a touch of class to the cabin. The rear features plenty of cargo space, but if more is needed, the rear seats can be folded forward to add more space.

On the exterior, the third generation Hilux Surf is memorable, handsome, and fully optioned out in this example. Aftermarket rain guards protect occupants on misty days, and features like the large front facing fog lights mounted to the OEM grill guard give the driver all the visibility needed for the road, or trail, that lies ahead. Finished in a stunning Stellar Blue Metallic over a Metallic Silver two tone, this Surf stands out from the more neutral colors often seen on most other Surfs and 4Runners of this era. A tire carrier swings open in the rear for easy access to the cargo area and helps to keep any needed tire changes, accessable, simple and easy.

With just 121,562 original miles, this third generation Surf is only getting warmed up.
