The Second Generation Ford Raptor.
The Ford F-150 Raptor debuted for the 2010 model year as a product of the Ford Special Vehicle Team (SVT) - a unit within Ford responsible for elevating the marque with remastered, high-performance variations. Before the Raptor, the SVT team had previously tackled an F-150 variation - the Lightning - and also developed a Mustang, Focus, and even a Contour.
These original, First Generation Ford F-150 SVT Raptors were available from 2010 to 2014, after which the submodel took a brief reprieve while Ford reorganized SVT, Ford Team RS, and Ford Racing together into a global entity: Ford Performance.
Then, for the 2017 model year, the Ford F-150 Raptor returned (sans the SVT nomenclature) with more grit and attitude than before.
The Second Generation Raptor materially trumps its older brother by way of suspension, aesthetic, and power. While both are impressive in their own right, the Second Generation gains two inches of suspension travel, two more inches of ground clearance, and Fox 3.0 shocks with continuously variable compression dampening, which adapt to the road conditions in real-time. From a power perspective, the First Generation rocked two V8 engine: a 5.4L, then a more highly-desired 6.2L. For the Second Generation, Ford opted for a high-output 3.5L twin-turbo V6 that bests its predecessors in weight, power, and efficiency. It's a no-brainer upgrade, as long as you can tolerate losing that unhinged, unmistakable V8 sound. With respect to the aesthetic, both Generations offer substantial differentiation from the standard F-150, but the difference between the generations are mostly noticied by way of the headlights, taillights, and grille.
The Second Generation Raptor gave way to the Third for the 2021 model year. With the new Generation came even better suspension parts and some minor aesthetic changes. And, while it continues to employ the 3.5L V6 with some performance enhancements, the all-new Ford F-150 Raptor R will pack a 5.2L supercharged V8 good for a mind-blowing 700 hp. and 640 lb.-ft. torque.
