Some builds evolve slowly over decades. Others are torn down and reimagined around one owner’s vision. This 1981 Jeep CJ-7 falls firmly into the latter category, with the seller reporting more than $65,000 invested into a custom restoration that transforms the classic CJ into a lifted, V8-powered rig while retaining some of the simple, recognizable elements that make an old Jeep an old Jeep.

Finished in a Metallic Arctic White wrap over a fiberglass body, the CJ rides on a 6 in. suspension lift and 35 in. tires. Under the hood, the original powertrain has given way to a Chevrolet small-block V8 backed by an automatic transmission, with power steering, power brakes and a custom-fabricated cooling system added to make the package considerably more usable.
  • Chevy V8 Power: The centerpiece of the build is its Chevrolet small-block V8 conversion. Rather than simply dropping a V8 between the frame rails, the build incorporates a custom-fabricated cooling system to support the upgraded engine. An automatic transmission, power steering and power-assisted brakes further separate this CJ from the comparatively primitive factory configuration.
  • 6 In. Lift: A 6 in. suspension lift gives the Jeep its unmistakable stance and provides clearance for 35 in. tires. The combination dramatically changes the proportions of the CJ-7 while retaining the short-wheelbase footprint that has made these Jeeps such popular platforms for custom off-road builds.
  • Dana 44 Upgrade: The seller reports a brand-new custom Dana 44 rear axle assembly as part of the restoration. The braking system has also received significant attention, including a full caliper brake conversion. CARFAX records from July 2023 document extensive brake work including a replacement brake booster, brake cable, brake pressure control valve and front brake hoses, along with a complete brake-fluid service.
  • Custom Inside: Despite the extensive mechanical and exterior changes, the cabin retains OEM-style seating, carpeting and steering wheel. Dynamat insulation has been installed throughout, while a custom sound system and air horn add a few decidedly non-stock touches.
  • Recent Mechanical Work: The restoration extends well beyond the headline modifications. CARFAX shows a substantial service visit in July 2023 that included carburetor work, front wheel bearings/hubs, power-steering lines, a rear axle seal, spark plugs and wires, thermostat and housing, oil-pan work, an oil and filter change, and five mounted tires. Later that year, the alternator and rear wheel bearings/hubs were replaced and wiring repairs were performed.
This CJ isn't trying to be a factory-correct restoration. Its appeal comes from how far the build departs from stock while still preserving the character of an early CJ-7. The fiberglass body, Chevy V8, 6 in. lift, 35s, Dana 44 rear axle and upgraded braking system make it a purpose-built custom rather than a lightly modified survivor.

The seller reports more than $65,000 invested in the restoration, and the available history shows that the Jeep has continued to receive mechanical attention after the major build work was completed. It also appears to have seen relatively little recent use: CARFAX recorded 7,179 miles in June 2023, 7,633 in September 2024 and 8,500 miles in July 2026. Because earlier records contain substantially higher mileage readings, however, true chassis mileage is unknown (TMU).
