Exterior Overview
When considering a Japanese market SUV, it’s hard to find a model more versatile than the Hilux Surf. These terrific trucks share the majority of their parts with USDM 4Runners, while models like this turbodiesel SSR-X Limited outclass your average Toyota in both performance and fuel economy. This 1997 model also looks the part, finished in a new coat of Soul Red Crystal Metallic (46V). Set off by a 2″ rear hitch receiver, refinished 16″ WEDS wheels, stylish rear spoiler, an OEM spare tire swingarm, and OEM rainguards, the cosmetics are in good nick, and it’s hard to find much to complain about save for a prior replacement of the hood and passenger front fender. Best of all, the 85k miles on the clock are verified and documented, and work to keep this Surf collectible for decades to come. Fresh off a recent service, easy to drive, reliable, and unlike anything else on the road, it’s easy to see why our clientele love these Japanese Classics!
Interior Overview
The interior is in good shape, and Toyota really knew how to design a cockpit to withstand the test of time. The Limited charcoal cloth upholstery is in good shape overall, which is a rare find on any decades-old sport-utility. In fact, the only gripe we have is with some bolster wear on the driver’s bucket. The same can be said for the condition of the carbon-trimmed dash, which has resisted excessive peeling, fading, or UV distortion, and safety-conscious occupants benefit from dual SRS airbags up front for a bit of extra peace of mind. The center stack is easy to navigate and intuitively designed. A simple to use climate control system sits front and center, pumping out cold A/C and hot heat on command, ideal for those in seasonal climates. There’s also an upgraded Pioneer audio system to broadcast your tunes. The driver has access to quite a few comfort options and power amenities. Power windows unfurl with haste, and in true 4Runner fashion the rear glass powers down too. Also operable are power locks and side mirrors. Unique to Japan-market examples, the rear seats recline slightly, and just like our USDM variants, the rear bench can fold flat to stuff in some additional cargo. The headliner is tidy, and the carpets have resisted excessive wear and tear apart from a few light stains. Sleek factory floor mats have been included, and we’ve retained the original owner’s manual and maintenance booklet to preserve this Hilux’s history. Overall, this Surf is clean where it counts, and despite some moderate steering wheel wear, we think the next owner will be pleased with the interior condition.
Mechanical Overview
For those who seek the capability of a real-deal body on frame SUV, yet need the fuel economy of a midsized sedan, the 1KZ-TE powered drivetrain under the hood of this Surf is here to help. Fresh off a comprehensive service, the mechanicals also benefit from a few performance upgrades, including a brand new Eibach lift kit we installed here at the shop. Before it could tackle its first road test, a check-in service was needed, and we tossed in a new 12v battery to help the 3.0TD crank over. We performed a fresh oil and filter service, installed a new valve cover gasket, and replaced the engine air filter and fuel filter to keep things smooth. A new thermostat was tossed in, and we flushed in new coolant for good measure. Finally, we buttoned everything up with a new muffler. After some new accessory belts, the KZ runs tip-top. The four-pot is mated to a slick-shifting automatic transmission that’s fresh off a fluid service. It sends power to the rear wheels via a selective transfercase. For snow or other loose surfaces, 4WD engages with the push of a button, and a center locking differential and 4WD low are close by for sticky situations. The new shocks and springs handle larger road imperfections with ease, and new front lower control arms and ball joints were installed to help pass VA state inspection. To shore up handling, we also installed new swaybar links all the way around and new rear upper control arms. We did the legwork of performing a full steering rack rebuild, complete with new seals and boots. New inner and outer tie rods were chucked on to make the most of its time in the shop, and a power steering fluid flush and four wheel alignment was performed, of course. The ABS brakes have been fully serviced with new pads, calipers, and rotors up front, and new shoes in the rear. We also flushed out the brake fluid and replaced it with new stuff. Tracking straight as an arrow, this should prolong the life of the freshly installed 33″ Falken rubber, and take this red sled to whatever corners of the backcountry it wants to explore.
