The 70 series Land Cruiser is an enduring platform. The body on frame construction could survive the apocalypse, the styling is timeless, and this 1995 KZJ78’s turbodiesel drivetrain is fun and efficient to operate. Boasting a sought after manual transmission, this one-off Black Olive Land Cruiser Prado boasts a J77 front end conversion, which does a lot to set this 70 off. Save for some light paint imperfections, the cosmetics are above average overall, and OEM rainguards, LED tail lamps, and refinished factory alloys complete the rugged aesthetic. It also has a rear Curt receiver installed, if you need to pull around a small trailer. Better yet, the 134k miles on the clock are verified, documented, and do a lot to cement the value of this appreciating asset. Interior Overview
For an interior penned in the late 70’s, we applaud this Prado’s cabin design for holding up so well, even in the modern age. It’s packed with plenty of modern amenities, niceties, and even boasts third row seating and custom leather upholstery throughout. The custom cowhides take the form of leather seat covers, with matching material found in the door panels and center console. It complements the gray dash cover nicely, which has been obscured by a fitted dash mat that masks a few hairline cracks. Tucked down in the center stack, upgraded Clarion audio comes preloaded with MJ’s greatest hits, which keep the cabin bumping through upgraded speakers. Adjacent to the touch screen, the climate control unit is easy to operate and pumps in cold A/C and hot heat when needed. The driver can get comfortable behind a woodgrain steering wheel and a tilt adjustable steering column, and power lumbar support can be dialed in on longer trips. Power windows, locks, and side mirrors work like a charm, and an expansive power moonroof can unfurl to supplement the cabin with a fresh breeze. The third row is easy to deploy, or remove depending on where your priorities lie, and the middle bench can flip fully forward to expand the cargo hold. The headliner is taut and tidy, and the carpets are clean. Even the original owner’s manual is included with the purchase.
Mechanical Overview
Fortunately for enthusiasts, this is one SUV that can talk the talk and walk the walk. This means the rugged styling isn’t just for show. This body on frame Cruiser has a real deal turbodiesel under the hood, and to get you ready for stateside driving, we’ve given this Prado a comprehensive recent service, with some pricey maintenance items addressed for a true turn key experience! It cranks over with swiftness, care of a new 12v battery, and after a fresh oil and filter service it was ready for a comprehensive check-over. To rid the 1KZ-TE engine of unwanted contaminants, we refreshed the 3.0TD with a new engine air filter and fuel filter. We also tended to a leaking valve cover gasket and replaced the half moon seals for good measure. Out of all the vehicles we sell, the 1KZ engine has just about the best track record as far as durability is concerned. This one is mated to a desirable manual gearbox, which goes through the tree smoothly. Power is sent to a selective transfercase. To maximize fuel economy, 2WD is standard, and 4WD can rapidly engage with auto locking front hubs. The suspension was also refreshed with brand new shocks on all four corners. To help this Cruiser ace state inspection, we installed a new front steering stabilizer, and replaced the front and rear panhard bars. New rear swaybar bushings and trailing arm bushings were installed to button up this chassis, and for being shaped like a massive brick, the handling is surprisingly predictable. The steering is easy to maneuver, and the brakes stop on command, thanks to new front pads. The factory rolling stock is freshly refinished and wrapped in good BFGoodrich rubber. Knee deep in tread, and superbly stylish, they’ll keep you glued to the pavement for tens of thousands of miles to come.
