Mitsubishi’s 3rd generation Pajero proves that you can indeed have all the grit and fun of a traditional 4×4 truck, with the weight savings and rigidity of a modern unibody SUV. The brand’s redesign for 1999 was met with worldwide acclaim, and this 2000 Pajero Exceed is a handsome example. It’s a friendly reminder that Mitsubishi once ruled the roost when it came to off-road excellence. Finished in Summit White (W09)/Silver, this 5-door SUV is set off by OEM rainguards, factory roof rack crossbars, and two-tone body cladding. The cosmetics are in good shape throughout, save for a few small rock chips and dings, and this turbodiesel treat boasts a mere 70k verified and documented miles on the odometer. Fresh off a recent service, vetted by our team of trained technicians, and reconditioned only to Japanese Classic standards, it’s easy to see why we think this is one of Mitsubishi’s best products yet!

The interior ditches its typical drab cloth upholstery in favor of plush leather appointments. Both driver and passenger benefit from heated buckets that keep your tushy warm, and driver’s power adjustment is handy too. In terms of seating arrangements, the Pajero is as versatile as they come. The middle bench reclines and folds forward, and like a magic trick the third row can also stow into the floor to maximize cargo capacity. Save for a minor tear on the center armrest, it’s hard to complain about the condition of the cowhides, too. If you need to tow around the full 6 extra passengers, the seats are easy enough to deploy, and head and legroom is spacious for all. Focusing back in on the pilot, daily driving is made more comfortable with a tilt adjustable steering column, and dual SRS airbags add a bit of extra safety behind the wheel. An optional command center screen displays information on audio, climate control, and Japanese navigation, and save for a touchy volume knob, all the above work well. Cold A/C and hot heat can be pumped into the cabin on command, and rear passengers gain dual zone functionality to boot. Power windows, locks, and electric folding side mirrors work like a charm, and a large moonroof is available to let in additional natural light, although it no longer opens or shuts. The headliner is clean, and factory carpet mats protect the upholstery beneath. A laundry list of OEM literature and maintenance booklets have been retained, and as a whole, we think even more selective enthusiasts will be really pleased with its condition.

Under the bonnet is a real powerhouse of an engine. Redesigned with additional displacement, modern direct-injection technology, and increased fuel efficiency, this punchy and quick 3.2l does a swell job at lugging around this full sized SUV. Best of all, it’s fresh off a recent service, and springs to life, care of two new 12v batteries. From there, we performed an oil and filter change. A new engine air filter and fuel filter get you on track for future maintenance, and with the maintenance performed, this big block I4 hops up to highway speeds with ease, and sends power straight to Mitsubishi’s legendary Super Select 4WD transfercase. A center locker and low range can be engaged when driving off the beaten path. We changed out the front right wheel bearing to keep the drivetrain tip-top, and this sweet design lets you jump in and out of 4WD on the fly. The chassis benefits from new front upper and lower ball joints to bolster the suspension, as well as new front swaybar links, and this spritely three-door soaks up road imperfections large and small. The power steering is easy to maneuver, and the ABS brakes grab confidently. This Pajero platform has its perks, as most driveline parts are shared with our stateside Monteros. Capped off with fresh Falken all-terrains and a four-wheel alignment, you’ll have plenty of tread to track straight and go to go wherever your heart desires!
